Who Actually IS an All-Star?

Well, the voting has ended, and the teams have been announced – the starters as selected by fan voting, and the remaining rosters as selected by the Commissioner’s Office (taking into account fan voting, the need to have at least one representative from each team, and the need to have a balanced roster). To my dismay, I find that I got the number of players on each team wrong. It’s 32, not 35. That’ll show me….

Anyway, one can see the full rosters in many places. These are all listed by position. But what if they were listed by team? What would they look like? Let’s compare them with my selections, and see how off I was. You will also note that there are only 31 chosen players for each team here. The last spot is chosen in one final round of fan voting. We shall see…..

Don’t forget. The actual rosters are subject to change due to players being injured. Mike Trout will still be rehabbing by the time the game comes around; his starting spot has been given to Boston’s Mookie Betts.

NOTE: Italics indicate the starters as chosen by the fans.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Arizona Diamondbacks

Actual: Zack Grienke, Robbie Ray, Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb
Me: Grienke, Ray, and Goldschmidt. I completely overlooked Lamb.

Atlanta Braves

Actual: Ender Enciarte
Me: Nick Markakis, Freddie Freeman. Meh. There really aren’t any obvious All-Stars here.

Chicago Cubs

Actual: Wade Davis
Me: Wade Davis, Kris Bryant, Jason Heyward, Wilson Contreras. One would think that the World Champions would have more All-Stars, but the Cubs have been wallowing in mediocrity so far this year.

Cincinnati Reds

Actual: Joey Votto, Zack Cozart
Me: Joey Votto, Zack Cozart. Hooray! I got them right! Well, they are the obvious selections.

Colorado Rockies

Actual: Greg Holland, D.J. LeMahieu, Nolan Arenado, Charlie Blackmon
Me: Holland, Arenado, and Blackmon.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Actual: Clayton Kershaw, Kenley Jansen, Corey Seager, Cody Belligner
Me: The same.

Miami Marlins

Actual: Marcel Ozuna, Giancarlo Stanton
Me: Ozuna and Stanton, with Ichiro Suzuki. No room for sentiment on the actual roster, I guess.

Milwaukee Brewers

Actual: Corey Knebel
Me: Eric Thames, Chase Anderson. I was way off here. Never even considered Knebel.

New York Mets

Actual: Michael Conforto
Me: Michael Conforto

Philadelphia Phillies

Actual: Pat Neshek
Me: Pat Neshek. Obvious, so I shouldn’t get credit for guessing right.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Actual: Josh Harrison
Me: Ivan Nova, Andrew McCutchen. I never even thought of Harrison…

San Diego Padres

Actual: Brad Hand
Me: Yangervis Solarte. See my comments on Atlanta.

San Francisco Giants:

Actual: Buster Posey
Me: Buster Posey. He’d be an All-Star on any team.

Washington Nationals

Actual: Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg, Ryan Zimmerman, Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy
Me: Scherzer, Zimmerman, Harper, Murphy. Does *any* team *need* to have FIVE All-Stars? I’d put a limit of four on it if I were in charge….

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Baltimore Orioles

Actual: Jonathan Schoop
Me: Jonathan Schoop, Trey Mancini

Boston Red Sox

Actual: Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrel, Mookie Betts
Me: Chris Sale, Craig Kimbrel, Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts. Close enough.

Chicago White Sox

Actual: Avasil Garcia
Me: Avasil Garcia, Tommy Kahnle. If I had remembered that there were only 32 players on each team, Kahnle would most likely have missed the cut.

Cleveland Indians

Actual: Corey Kluber, Andrew Miller, Francisco Lindor, Jose Ramirez, Michael Brantley
Me: Corey Kluber, Francisco Lindor, Edwin Encarnacion. Strange how the WS Champion Cubs have only one All-Star, but the team they beat has five….

Detroit Tigers

Actual: Michael Fulmer
Me: Alex Avila

Houston Astros

Actual: Dallas Keuchel, Lance McCullers, Jose Altuve, Carlos Correa, George Springer
Me: Keuchel, Altuve, Correa, Springer. I suppose you could justify giving five spots to the best team in baseball….

Kansas City Royals

Actual: Jason Vargas, Salvador Perez
Me: Jason Vargas, Salvador Perez, Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer. Guess I overrated the Royals.

Los Angeles Angels

Actual: Mike Trout
Me: Blake Parker, Mike Trout. Well, Trout’s a “gimme”

Minnesota Twins

Actual: Ervin Santana, Miguel Sano
Me: Ervin Santana, Miguel Sano

New York Yankees

Actual: Luis Severino, Deltin Betances, Aaron Judge, Starlin Castro, Gary Sanchez
Me: Betances, Judge, and Sanchez. Severino and Castro? Come on!

Oakland A’s

Actual: Yonder Alonso
Me: Yonder Alonso

Seattle Mariners

Actual: Nelson Cruz
Me: Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano. Cano over the Yankees’ Starlin Castro any day.

Tampa Bay Rays

Actual: Corey Dickerson
Me: Corey Dickerson, Logan Morrison

Texas Rangers

Actual: Yu Darvish
Me: Yu Darvish

Toronto Blue Jays

Actual: Justin Smoak
Me: Josh Donaldson, Robert Ozuna. Never even considered Smoak.

So, I guessed right with 45 of the 62 total players. Not as impressive as it sounds, since I did pick a total of eight more players than were actually allowed. And a lot of the choices were really obvious.

For the record, the “Final Vote” players are:

AL: Elvis Andrus TEX, Didi Gregorius NYY, Logan Morrison TOR, Xander Bogaerts BOS, and Mike Moustakas KC.

NL: Kris Bryant CHC, Justin Bour MIA, Mark Reynolds COL, Anthony Rendon WAS, and Justin Turner LA.

If I’m voting here, I clearly have to pick players I already picked for my teams. I’ll go with Kris Bryant and Logan Morrison.

My starting pitchers? Clayton Kershaw and Chris Sale.
