Polish All Stars 2, Mets 0
The Poles needed a win in order to avoid having to face Jacob deGrom down three games to none in the series. Stan Coveleski was up to the task. He notched eleven strikeouts while scattering six singles and two walks over eight innings, Mets batters complained that he was “putting a little something extra” on the ball, but as one of the known spitballers who were granted an exemption after the practice was forbidden in 1921, there was little they could do about it.
The Mets best chance came in the bottom of the third. Kevin McReynolds and Edgardo Alfonzo led off with singles to bring up the top of the order with two on. But Jose Reyes and David Wright both whiffed, and then Mike Piazza flied out to right to end the threat.
For the Mets, Dwight Gooden was almost as good, fanning eight over seven innings of work. The only runs he gave up were due to a home run by Al Simmons in the fifth.
Jim Konstanty came on in the ninth for the Poles, and shut the Mets down in order to earn the save.
