Mets 14, Polish All Stars 7

It didn’t go as expected. With two Hall of Fame pitchers facing each other, one would think it would be a low-scoring duel. Nor was it a slugfest; there were only six extra base hits in total.

The Mets jumped out to an early lead, thanks to uncharacteristic wildness from Harry Coveleski. He loaded the bases in the 1^st with single and a pair of walks, and paid for it after a pair of singles pushed across a total of three runs. He settled down in the 2^nd, but after giving up another three runs in the 3^rd, he had to be sent to the showers.

Tom Seaver had his own meltdown in the fourth.

After three walks and a home run by Carl Yastrzemski tied the score at 6, the Mets had to get their bullpen going in a hurry. Fortunately, Seaver got out of that inning without further damage, but that was it for him.

A bad throw by 3B Whitey Kurowski let Keith Hernandez score the go-ahead run for the Mets in the top of the 5^th; that was the only scoring until the 7^th when the Mets blew it open. Ray Sadecki had scattered three singles and two walks over three innings, but the Mets finally figured him out. Only a great running catch by Stan Musial to rob David Wright of a double prevented further damage. Armando Benitez gave up a run in the bottom of the 7^th, but Roger McDowell and John Franco shut the door on the Poles.

The Mets would put the game out of reach with three more runs in the top of the 8^th, thanks to doubles by Reyes and Piazza.
